Here are a few ideas
- Place them in baskets, drawers etc. where the children can independently select them and incorporate them into their open-ended play.
- The boulders are great for construction activities. The children loved stacking them. It was a really good task for hand-eye coordination skills. The children we observed really thought about which would balance and got great satisfaction from building tall towers.
- Vary where the boulders are used. They work well on the floor or low tables. We used a mirror table which added to the sparkle effect.
- Use as part of a shiny or mirror collection of resources. The children can peek into them to see their reflection. We made a silver shimmer room, with lots of complimentary resources.
- Interact with the child and talk about what they can see. What do the boulders look and feel like? How many can you build? What size are they? Can they find the largest, the smallest etc.? (This is a great early maths skills activity.
- The boulders make a great small world space location.
- This is an open-ended resource and the children will all utilise them in their own preferred way. Some will stack them, line them up or transport them. They may have very specific schematic interests. Because of their metallic, shiny finish they are a highly engaging and appealing resource.
